Inspired by the legend of Saint Valentine, the man, this piece is adorned with several symbols associated with the saint. First his skull, which to this day can be seen in a Church in Italy. As Valentine was sentenced to death by clubbing and stoning, he survived and so was beheaded. The crown of vintage flowers represent the scattered flowers adorning the real reliquary skull, and pays homage to the modern day themes of Valentines day. The writing across his head also pays homage to the original skull which too has similar writing. Before his death, Valentine cured a girl of her blindness thus the beaded eyes. And finally the bees, Saint Valentine is not only the patron saint of bee keepers but in the catholic church bees represent the ideal catholic. Bees work hard, and non stop, at their tasks to benefit the good of the hive, not the individual.
The skull is hand embroidered on canvas fabric and sewn onto red upholstery fabric. The eyes and bees were hand beaded on separate pieces of canvas and sewn on, thier borders intentionally left rough.
