Inspired by the medical and sacred cures of medieval Europe's eras of plague. It was believed that plague was caused by devils. These devils were attracted to bad smells and so to protect a household dead animals were often hung outside to lure the devil away from unsuspecting victims. Additionally the owl was seen as a representative of the devil, flying only at night and often seen as "dirty" and a spreader of disease. Hanging with the owl skull is a rowan tree branch and saint johns wort. Both plants were believed to have strong protective attributes, especially against the devil himself. Hand embroidered on charcoal linen fabric. Set in a wooden painted and distressed coffin. Sawtooth hanger in back for hanging.
