Inspired by the medical and sacred cures of medieval Europe's eras of plague. It was believed that plague was caused by devils. These devils were attracted to bad smells and so to protect a household dead animals were often hung outside to lure the devil away from unsuspecting victims. The raven skull represents these "stinks". Hanging with the skull are plants often used to heal plague- yarrow, mugwort and lavender. Hand embroidered on charcoal linen fabric. Set in a wooden painted and distressed coffin. Sawtooth hanger in back for hanging.
